On the summit of Mala Mojstrovka we were talking to some other people who recommended the Prisank Fensterweg, so the next day that is what we planned to do. We were very surprised when we arrived at the top of the Vršič pass at 7am to find that the car park was already full. Thankfully there was still space just above the lower car park, which didn’t add too much time onto our day.

The route was an enjoyable way of climbing the mountain, but it was very busy, with lots of people who were not used to being on steep terrain with plenty of rocks around. The majority of the route was very easy, but there was a short crux which had a very long queue which climbed up a few chimneys before squeezing through a rift.

We were soon approaching the end of the first klettersteig where we had to go through a massive window in the rock, which you can see from the valley. This section was not technically difficult at all, but there was a large queue to get out at the end of the route, the window was very impressive and it was certainly an enjoyable section of the route.

The window marked the end of the Fensterweg Klettersteig, however this was not anywhere near the summit. From here there was a long ridge to climb up to the summit of Prisank, this ridge was really enjoyable with lots of excellent scrambling, some of which was protected by a cable, along with really outstanding views in every direction.

The last climb up to the summit was fairly scrappy, but we were relieved to finally be at the summit where we enjoyed our lunch and the views before starting a long descent. We didn’t descent back along the ridge as some other people had been doing, but instead made a loop and descended the normal route. This lost the majority of the altitude on a fairly steep paths and scree slopes, while sheltered from the wind and in the heat of the afternoon sun. Needless to say this took a while and we both ran out of water, but eventually we made it down to the good path in the valley which took us back towards the Vršič pass.

As we had parked lower down we took the opportunity to stop at the Poštarski dom na Vršiču hut for a refreshing drink before the last 30 minutes of descent back down to the van.
