Flying from Fiesch has somehow eluded me for the past few years, but this season it was definitely high up on my list of requirements. This weekend I developed a plan, which would enable me two days of flying at Fiesch and two days flying and meeting a friend in Chamonix.
After work I set off towards Fiesch, however stopped at a hotel en route, unfortunately I had a terrible nights sleep in the hotel and I woke the next morning feeling pretty rough. I made the short drive to Fiesch and headed up to Riederalp as the Fiescheralp cable car was in revision.
The forecast for the first day was the worse xc forecast for the weekend, so I wasn’t really expecting much, my main objective was to enjoy the sights. Shortly after I took off I realised that I had managed to leave my InReach on take off, which was an expensive mistake as I still haven’t got it back!
From take off I climbed well and was quickly heading along the ridge and above the Eggishorn with the view that I had been lusting after. Unfortunately by this point my stomach was already starting to not feel so great. I continued east towards the Goms and was soon enjoying the quick climbs, however this was interspersed with feeling terrible just before vomiting.
As the day was blue the views were absolutely fantastic, but I wasn’t really able to enjoy them as much as I had hoped, as I was feeling so bad. The air also became more and more violent as the day continued, multiple times my hands were below my bum to stop the glider surging.
After getting to the turn point, I headed back to take off and continued west. However after only a few more valley crossings I decided that the conditions were getting too strong for how I was feeling, as running up to vomiting my ability to focus was very diminished.
I headed back to land in Fiesch after an 80km triangle, looking forward to returning later in the weekend when I was feeling better.
